What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy derived from sources that are replaceable or non-depletable within a reasonable time frame*.

We're committed to supporting renewable energy, so we promise our customers that for every single unit of electricity they buy from Red, Snowy Hydro Limited will match it by generating one unit of electricity from a renewable source.

So, remember as a Red Energy customer you are doing your bit to support renewable energy.

What is the difference between renewable and GreenPower Accredited energy?

Both are renewable forms of energy but one has been accredited by the GreenPower Program and the other hasn't

To gain GreenPower Accreditation an energy product must be generated from:

• eligible renewable energy sources that meet certain strict environmental standards; and
• a renewable energy facility built post-January 1997.

Because the Snowy Mountains Scheme was built over 50 years ago, the majority of its renewable electricity generation is not eligible for GreenPower accreditation. Since 1997, however, Snowy Hydro has constructed several new mini hydros on the Snowy Mountains Scheme which are GreenPower accredited. Red Energy promises that for every single unit of electricity customers buy on a 100% GreenPower accredited electricity product, Snowy Hydro Limited will match that by generating one unit of electricity from a GreenPower accredited source.
