Renewable Energy Explained

Renewable energy is energy derived from sources that do not expire and can be replaced or, as the name suggests, renewed. Snowy Hydro, our parent company produces on average 4,500 gigawatt hours of clean, renewable, hydro-electricity, or around 74 per cent of all renewable energy available in the National Electricity Market.

All our electricity comes from Snowy Hydro, which means we can offer our customers renewable energy.

At Red Energy, we promise that for every unit of electricity you buy from us, we’ll buy one unit from a hydro renewable source. So, remember as a Red Energy customer you are doing your bit for the environment.

What is the difference between renewable and GreenPower Accredited energy?

Both are renewable energy but one has been accredited and the other hasn’t.

To gain GreenPower Accreditation a product must be generated from:

  • eligible renewable energy sources that meet strict environmental standards
  • a renewable energy facility built post-January 1997

A GreenPower Accredited product will be available from Red Energy in 2008.

What are the benefits of renewable energy?

By using water, a renewable resource, electricity is generated without producing carbon dioxide emissions which are produced by other types of electricity generators, such as coal-fired power stations.

There are many Accredited Green Energy products in the market that comprise of only 10% Accredited Green Energy with the remainder sourced from non-renewable sources. These are still marketed as ‘Accredited Green Energy’ despite the fact that only 10% of their composition is renewable.
