How to Clean Double Glazed Windows
5th November 2024
What should you do if dirt, dust or moisture finds its way inside the panes of your double glazed windows? We’ve compiled some tips on how to maintain the double glazed windows in your home.
According to Your Home, up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost and up to 87% of its heat gained through windows. Double glazed windows are a proven energy-efficient addition to any home, helping to reduce heat loss or gain. They get a great wrap and for great reason.
As well as their excellent thermal efficiency, double glazed windows also help to reduce noise, condensation and mould. Given their higher initial cost compared to single-pane windows, it’s essential to maintain them properly.
But do double glazed windows require any special treatment or care compared to single glazing? The answer depends on their condition and specific issues. In this article, we’ll provide you with some handy tips for cleaning and maintaining your double glazed windows.
Everyday cleaning of double glazed windows
As we detailed in our article on double glazed windows, they consist of two glass panes separated by an air gap of at least 12mm. This gap is sealed to prevent dust, dirt, or moisture from entering between the panes.
If your double glazed windows are performing as they should, you shouldn’t see any marks or condensation between the glass panes. The seal is tight; no dust, dirt or moisture can make its way between the two panes.
Cleaning them is straightforward and similar to cleaning any other window:
- Vacuum around the window frame: Gently vacuum around the window frame and/or use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or grime.
- Clean with vinegar solution: Use a solution of four parts warm water and one part white vinegar (some people like to add a dash of dishwashing liquid) and wash the glass with a soft cloth.
- Use a soft toothbrush: Reach into the corners or edges where dirt may accumulate using a soft toothbrush.
- Buff for a streak-free finish: For a streak-free shine, finish by buffing the windows with newspaper or using a squeegee equipped with a window-cleaning strip.

Long-term maintenance tips
Regular maintenance extends the lifespan of double glazed windows and ensures optimal performance throughout the year.
- Inspect seals annually: Conduct an annual inspection of window seals for signs of wear, cracks, or gaps. Addressing seal issues promptly prevents moisture ingress and maintains energy efficiency.
- Lubricate hinges and locks: Apply silicone spray or a specialist window lubricant to hinges and locks. This prevents stiffness and ensures smooth operation during opening and closing.
- Address minor issues promptly: Repair loose handles, damaged weatherstripping, or malfunctioning locks promptly. This proactive approach prevents further damage and preserves the window's functionality.
Dealing with condensation between double glazed windows
If the seal between the two panes of glass is compromised – even slightly – you may notice the windows getting dirty on the inside. Dust, dirt, moisture, even spiders and their webs can turn your beautiful double glazing into a bit of a mess.
Unfortunately, it’s pretty much impossible for you to clean the insides of each pane with a cloth unless you pull the window apart, which is neither ideal nor recommended. So what can you do? As your first step, you should contact your glazier to get their advice. They may be able to provide you with a quote to fix the problem or replace the window.
The final word
Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to maximise the benefits of double glazed windows. By following these double glazed window cleaning tips, you can ensure they remain efficient, comfortable, and visually appealing for years to come.
