Nestled in his suburban home, his backyard is a testament to these principles—lush lemon trees, rows of carrots, and a cozy workshop where he spends hours crafting wooden projects. "I love being out here," he says, with a quiet pride. "It reminds me that you don’t need much to be happy."

At the heart of John’s life is his family—his wife, originally from the Philippines, fills their home with the aromas of adobo and sinigang, while they pickle the bounty from their garden.
“She’s a brilliant cook,” John says with a smile. “And we pickle everything we don’t eat right away. Energy’s part of that,” John says. “You cook with it, heat with it—it’s essential to the happiness of a household.”
