About Snowy Hydro
Snowy Hydro is the Australian company behind the remarkable Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. Described as one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world, the Scheme took twenty five years to build and consists of nine power stations, sixteen dams, 145 kilometres of tunnels and 80 kilometres of aqueducts. It plays a vital role in irrigation, moving water from the east to the west of the Great Dividing Range to help counteract the impacts of drought for farmers, whilst also using the water stored in the Scheme’s sixteen dams to generate clean, hydro electricity.
Snowy 2.0
Snowy 2.0 is the next chapter in the Snowy Scheme’s history. Construction began in 2019 and will link two existing dams, Tantangara and Talbingo, through a 27km underground tunnel and a new underground power station. It is the largest renewable energy project in Australia and it will underpin the nation’s transition to a low-carbon emissions future at the lowest cost for customers.
Red Energy’s renewable matching promise
Red Energy offers customers a renewable matching promise on a number of its products including the Red Wildlife Saver, the Taronga Flex (New South Wales only) and the Red EV Saver. The renewable matching promise means that for every unit of electricity you buy from Red Energy, Snowy Hydro Limited will match it by generating one unit of electricity from a renewable source.
Supporting Australian Communities
BCNA Pink Tram
Red Energy’s long standing relationship with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) has been boosted in 2021 through a new customer plan that donates up to $120 per household each year.
The Red BCNA Saver plan builds on Red Energy’s seven years of support of BCNA initiatives to help raise awareness of breast cancer in the community. Contributions from the new plan will help BCNA continue with their vision to ensure no patient is left to battle the disease on their own.
Paratriathlete Lauren Parker
Red Energy proudly sponsors Lauren Parker, 2020 Paralympic Silver medallist in the paratriathlon. Lauren competed at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and won a bronze medal, less than twelve months after a horrific accident on her bike that left her a paraplegic.
Calder United Soccer Club
Red supports Calder United Soccer Club, an all women’s club that develops young talented players, giving them the chance to play at the highest level.

The Snowy Scheme
The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world. The Scheme collects and stores the water that would normally flow east to the coast and diverts it through trans-mountain tunnels and power stations. The water is then released into the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers for irrigation.
The Scheme took 25 years to build and was completed in 1974. More than 100,000 people from over 30 countries came to work on the Scheme which took 25 years to build and was completed in 1974. Sixteen dams, nine power stations, 145kms of interconnected tunnels and 80kms of aqueducts were constructed. Even before the Scheme was completed, it was named as one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world.
